Artist Bio

Erica M Lyon has lived in Montana, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, California, Utah, and Ghana, West Africa. She attended Western Washington University to earn a BA in Fine Art. Her family’s passion for the wilderness and experience as an infant in the outdoors was a catalyst to her exploration in the wilderness. In her teenage years she was challenged and fell in love with rock climbing. Cliffs would call to her as places to play. She found the vertical world a free space to solve problems and push her to discover her own limits and strengths. She defined her artistic style in college and then refined it while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa, teaching art to Deaf students. There she was challenged by explaining art in sign language. It was this language she learned that taught her the next step with her art, how to clearly speak without words. Now her art work is a representation of her thoughts without words, of her travels up cliff faces, inward travels of the heart, mind and body, and travels to faraway places. She is constantly exploring new places. Erica lives in Kelly, WY where her and her husband are attending Teton Science Schools graduate program.

She is looking forward to winter in northern Utah and going attending Teton Science School in August 2009.

Artist Statement

I see my work as a representation of thought, travel, and exploration. I am inspired by the balance of space in the environment. Working with pen allows me to make permanent marks of my perceptions. All of my pieces are hand created using only pen and watercolor.

She defined her style in college and then refined it while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa, teaching art to deaf students. She is constantly exploring new places. Erica moved to St. George to live in the desert and enjoy the simple beauty that it has to offer and what she has found is a new place to paint and explore. She currently is works as a professional hiking guide and at “Earth and Light Gallery” in Kayenta.

Erica M Lyon was born in Helena, MT and grew up in Oregon and Washington. She attended Western Washington University to earn a BA in Fine Art and a double minor in Art History and Education.
Her family’s passion for the wilderness and experience as an infant in the outdoors was a catalyst to her exploration in the wilderness. In her teenage years she was challenged and fell in love with rock climbing. Cliffs would call to her as places to play, like a playground calling to a child, she found up there the freedom to solve problems that pushed her to discover her own limits and strengths.

She has always painted since a young age with her first easel handmade by her grandfather. On that easel finger painting master pieces begun and since that time she created her style – defining her style in school and then refining it while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa, teaching art to deaf students. There she was challenged by explaining art in sign language. It was this language she learned that taught her the next step with her art, how to clearly speak without words.
